Course Overview

Much like an antagonist in any good story, dental biofilm seems to be the main character in today’s clinical dentistry—we scale it, polish it, remove it, and dread it. It shows up on implants, removable prosthesis, in subgingival pockets and even in our dental unit waterlines. But what do we actually know about these complex microbiological communities living within each and every one of us? Are they always bad? Do they actually cause inflammation? Can we eliminate them completely? In this deep dive into the oral microbiome, Melissa Turner takes a step back and identifies what we do know about the microbes who dwell in our mouth—and helps us understand that there is much left to be discovered in the underworld that we call biofilm.
