For many children, a trip to the dentist can spark more than just nerves – it can trigger genuine anxiety that disrupts care and affects lifelong oral health. Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) in pediatric patients stem from complex factors including development, family dynamics, past experiences, and even the dental environment.
This course explores the origins of dental anxiety in children and distinguishes between general fear, anxiety, and odontophobia. Participants will learn to identify signs and symptoms of DFA and understand how social, emotional, and cultural influences shape pediatric dental behavior. With a focus on non-pharmacological techniques, attendees will gain actionable strategies to build trust, reduce fear, and create positive dental experiences for young patients – even after challenging appointments.
An Chih “Angela” Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH, FADHA has over 20 years of experience in pediatric dentistry as a dental assistant and hygienist. She is known for bringing creativity and empathy into clinical education, blending her background in film and television with her deep understanding of pediatric behavior. Through her platform @ThePediatricRDH, she empowers dental professionals with insights on compassionate pediatric care. Angela is also the founder of @AsianAmericanRDH, an active member and former Speaker of the House for the Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association, and a proud mother of two.
